Connector Building and APM Walk-Back Tunnel
Connector Building and Automated People Mover (APM) Station Walk-Back Tunnel – Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) – Chantilly, VA
The automated people mover (APM) system is a key component to meet the projections for future passenger traffic at IAD and replaces most of the mobile lounge fleet. With the planned replacement of the C/D Concourse by a future Tier 2 Concourse, the interim access from the APM station to the existing C/D Concourse is provided by a connector building and a pedestrian walk-back tunnel with moving walkways.
The three-story reinforced concrete and steel connector building provides vertical transition, by means of escalators and elevators, for passengers between the walk-back tunnel and the existing C/D Concourse.
The walk-back tunnel is a 435-foot long by 30-foot wide, reinforced concrete box structure with a hexagonal shaped cross section. It was designed for loads from New Large Aircraft (NLA), such as the Airbus A380, on the taxi lane above.
