Post-Earthquake Evaluations

Post-Earthquake Seismic Evaluation – Alexandria, VA

Rare seismic activity that occurred on August 23, 2011, prompted a structural survey and investigation of three multi-story buildings, located on Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia and owned by the General Services Administration (GSA).

Two of the buildings are post-tensioned reinforced concrete structures and the third building is a structural steel frame with deck-supported concrete slabs. All three buildings have lower-level parking garages, concrete masonry elevator and stair shaft walls, and roof-mounted mechanical equipment.

Interior and exterior surveys of the buildings were performed and observed structural damage was documented. After review of existing building drawings, recommendations and resolutions to structural deficiencies were provided.
