SERC – Mathias Lab

The Smithsonian Environment Research Center (SERC), Mathias Labs – Edgewater, MD

SERC is expected to be one of the most energy-efficient labs in the Country. This state of the art research laboratory project includes a two- story addition and the renovation of several existing lab spaces, which were built over many years. The design incorporated the phasing necessary to allow for the continuous use of the labs throughout construction.

Structural design elements included progressive collapse requirements and physical security requirements per Interagency Security Committee (ISC) Design Criteria and, seismic evaluations per ASCE/SEI 31.

In addition, the design and evaluation included underpinning of the existing building foundations and application of modified load conditions to multiple elements of the existing structure.  Elevated composite concrete slabs were designed for strict laboratory vibration requirements.

  • Total Project Cost: $29.0 million.
  • Size: 69,000 SF addition (90,000 SF total)
  • Goal LEED Gold
